Charlie Brooker on British and American TV News

A clip from Charlie Brookers Newswipe (8th April 2009) in which Brooker discusses the working of TV News on either side of the pond

@mujiel We Americans are regrettably misinformed on purpose.

As a people, we have a history of rising up and saying no to whatever it is that we do not agree or believe in, but with the media now being built around entertaining and not informing, we have become nothing sort of blithering idiots.

The Brits almost have it as bad though, as they are modeling their media after our more and more often.

Remember, the English Accent only SOUNDS smarter, but doesn’t mean that it is so.

@crazyboyxx Well, the distrust in government is really part of the US’s historical narrative. It’s what created the US in the first place.

If you know some American history you should not find this belief weird at all. It’s the whole foundation of the culture. Also, there are lots of Americans who despise Fox (myself included). At the same time, though it is incomprehensible to me, there are Americans who like Fox as well.

You and I will never understand how someone could like Fox.

@r2d23678 quite aside from the fact that “British ugly’s” makes no sense whatsoever (learn what apostrophes are for) and that American news reporters don’t seem any more physically attractive than British ones, I would point out that even if our lot looked like a bunch of homeless people fresh off the street it wouldn’t make any difference to their reporting. I’d rather my reporters be fugly, boring and factual rather than sexy, charismatic and bias over-the-top lunatics.

    >>Brilliant. Ahh.. I’m a TV production student studying this industry & Brooker always makes me curl up in self-digust at getting involved in such an industry. I should have eaten my own foetus. But still… excellentness. Especially at 1:38 :-) Very funny.

On a random side note… I’m watching this with Supertramp’s “You Win, I Lose” playing in the background. It seems to fit the first three minutes. Sort of.
